What Are The Chances of Having Twins on Clomid?

Whenever a couple has been trying to conceive for a year without any success, the first thing that they will do is schedule a visit with the doctor and start taking the next step. The next step is that the doctor would check the man’s sperm count and quality and see if that checks out. And the doctor would run several tests on the woman to see if her hormone levels check out. Ultrasounds would be done to check the structural part of her reproductive system, as well as a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) would be done to check to see if her fallopian tubes are functional. At this point, the couple would be referred to a fertility specialist. If everything structurally checks out with the woman, including that the hysterosalpingogram indicated that the tubes are fine- then it is possible that she is not ovulating on a regular basis. Even if the blood work indicates that there is no obvious hormonal issue present, she will be given a drug called clomiphene citrate, also called Serophene or Clomid, which is the most common term for this drug. If the man in fact has an issue with his sperm count and quality, then the fertility specialist will suggest intrauterine insemination (IUI) to be done to help conception happen. This way, a tube that injects his washed sperm will go into her cervix and bypass the long way through the fallopian tubes and insert the sperm right into the uterus right around the time ovulation is expected. Even if a woman who has to have IUI done who ovulates regularly may be put on Clomid to help time ovulation, as it would be monitored via ultrasound and bloodwork. Now that we are talking about a woman who has to take Clomid due to the fact that she may not be ovulating regularly due to having a condition such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which can cause anovulation- and/or has to do IUI due to her partner having poor sperm quality. One thing that will frequently cross a couple who has to go through fertility treatments involving the woman having to take Clomid is what are the chances of conceiving twins?

How Clomid Works

Before we go into that, let’s talk a little bit about Clomid and how it works. Clomid was the first fertility drug in 1967 that became part of the market that came in injection form at the time. Now it is available as a tablet, and the dosages range from 50mg to 200mg. Side effects can range from having hot-flashes, moodiness, breast tenderness, nausea and fatigue. They are rather uncomfortable but not serious. Clomid is usually taken from day 5-9 of a woman’s cycle (or it can be taken from day 2 to day 6 of the cycle). What the drug does is that it tricks the brain into thinking there is not enough estrogen and it ends up sending out hormones that stimulate follicular growth and egg maturation. Hence, it triggers ovulation, and again the growth of the follicle is monitored through ultrasound and bloodwork. Because Clomid is a safe drug, couples do often wonder the statistics of ovulation happening, and pregnancy resulting. Here are important points to take in about Clomid’s effects:
  • 80% of women will ovulate while taking Clomid within the first 3 months.
  • 40% of women will conceive while taking Clomid within the first 3 months.
  • The live birth rate for women taking Clomid is between 30% to 60%.
  • Couples have a 10% higher chance of conceiving twins than they would naturally.
That is right! Many couples who have to use Clomid whether it is due to anovulation on the woman’s part, or the need for IUI due to the man’s poor sperm quality - or if both reasons are happening at the same time- these couples are concerned about how likely they are to have Clomid twins.

 Odds of conceiving twins on Clomid

Now that it is known that the odds of achieving a twin pregnancy on Clomid is 10% higher than it would be naturally- the couple will have to find a way to embrace the possibility. This statistic is relevant for an increased chance of having fraternal twins, meaning two eggs being released at once, being fertilized by two different sperm. This statistic does not apply to identical twins- when one single fertilized egg splitting into two embryos. Even though a 10% higher chance is not significantly higher, the odds are still increased. Therefore, it may be recommended for the couple who is trying to conceive while Clomid is in the picture to educate themselves on what a twin pregnancy involves. A twin pregnancy has more complications than a singleton pregnancy, due to the fact that expected weight gain is 40 lbs instead of 25 lbs for a single baby. Therefore, the risk of gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia due to extra weight gain, extra stress and pressure on the body from carrying twins is higher. Women taking Clomid will have to prepare themselves since a twin pregnancy has a slightly higher chance of happening of possibly dealing with extra fatigue and even more nausea and sickness.

How to increase odds of conceiving twins on Clomid

However, if a couple loves the idea of having twins, and wants to know how to increase the odds beyond 10% while the woman is on Clomid- then there are methods to increase the odds of having a twin pregnancy while on Clomid. Firstly, if a twin pregnancy is desired then it is recommended for the woman to not drop too much weight if she is overweight. She can safely carry a pregnancy if she has a BMI of 30, which is somewhat overweight. The extra weight can be encouraging for ovulation to happen especially if Clomid is being taken. The woman should also increase dairy intake whether it is from drinking more milk or eating more cheese. It is best to not eat too much ice cream because too much sugar can inhibit ovulation even while on Clomid. That would defeat the purpose. The hormones in dairy products can help stimulate ovulation even further. It is also known that if there is a history in the family, on either side, that alone can also increase the odds of having twins. However, regardless of whether a couple wants or doesn’t want twins- it is known that the odds of having twins on Clomid is 10% higher than it naturally would. Couples can either embrace the possibility of that happening or increase the odds even more if that is what they want!

Mommy Moments: Preggy Tales

Hello Mommies! It's Friday once again and let's share our preggy tales. I got pregnant with Chloe 9 months after I got married. I found myself lucky for I didn't experience morning sickness and I don't even crave any food (except when I attended a party that I expect them to serve us lechon, hehe).

But when I was six months pregnant, I got sick with Chicken Pox. My world turned upside side for a moment that I cried on the way to the hospital. Fortunately, I was on my second trimester that the doctor said the baby was safe. It would have been dangerous for 1st or last term of pregnancy.

I was 6months pregnant in here. Enjoying fresh air at Duka Bay after I quarantined myself at home when I had chicken pox.

And on July 18, 2003, I gave birth to Chloe Alexandra, 7.6 lbs, via C/S. I was hoping for a normal delivery but she was too big for my cervix to pass and my labor didn't progress. The pain was excruciating that I wasn't ashamed anymore to scream at the top of my lungs. Problem was, I only had 2-3 cm progress and my bag of water didn't even rupture. I had an emergency C/S and believe me when I say this, the pain was only 1/16th compared to my labor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On my 2nd pregnancy, I promised myself I will not go on labor anymore. My mind was fixed to have my second baby delivered via C/S. It was expensive but I don't want to have traumatic experience anymore. I still didn't have any morning sickness, no craving but my back was painful. And on my 5th month, I had spotting and when I had an ultrasound, it was found out I had placenta previa marginalis. I was advised on strict bed rest with bathroom privileges. Luckily, when the baby turned her position on the 7th month, I was safe but still took extra precaution.
I gave birth to Zoe Ysabella, 6.9 lbs, on July 12, 2010 via C/S. I've experienced the pain this time especially when the pain reliever started to wear off. My feet swelled few days after I gave birth that I was given lasix to take by my OB Gyne.
But despite all these uncomfortable experiences, I was very happy to see my 2 angels especially when I held them in my arms. I was thankful that both my girls were healthy, normal and safe and that was all I prayed for. Anything to share? Join us at
Meet Zoe Ysabella!
Hello everyone! Let me share with you the good news. I already gave birth last July 12, 2010 via cesarean section to a healthy baby girl. I checked in @ 7 am on that day at the hospital and was at the operating table at 2 pm. Baby was out at 2:53 pm. My husband was my only watcher but relatives dropped by to visit and also my little girl Chloe. I stayed at the hospital for only 2 days. We discharged on a Wednesday afternoon.
Ok, about the baby's details, we named her Zoe Ysabella. Zoe means Life. Ysabella (Isabella, initially), which means my God is a vow, was chosen by Chloe. She weighed about 6 lbs and 9 oz. I decided to have C/S operation because I had a terrible labor during my first pregnancy. Besides, I had placenta previa on my 5th to 7th month of pregnancy. Anyway, I'm better these days compared before. Below are the pictures of our new bundle of joy.
Ready For Birth
(From Chat Time With Mommy Cookie)
I have already packed most of the things needed at the hospital. I am now set for a C/S operation this coming Monday, July 12. I pray I will not get sick so that my schedule will proceed as is. My first pregnancy was okay until on the date of my delivery. I had a terrible labor which lasted for several hours and I had no sleep at night at all. Obviously, I don't have that power and strength to deliver my baby naturally. It turned out that the baby was too big for me and I only progressed up to 2 cm only. My bag of water did not even break and I had only spotting for a few days before my due date.
This time, I have already conditioned my mind that I will be on C/S again. The advantage for this is that I can choose which date I want to give birth and I will not undergo another terrible labor again. Besides, my pregnancy this time was quite different from the first. I had placenta previa on my 5th-7th months so, natural delivery is not anymore my option. The disadvantage is, C/S is much expensive and will take me a few days at the hospital before I can come home. Plus, I have to endure the pain and take care of the scar again...
Well, this is it! I have barely 3 days left and I'm gonna be back at the operation table. Pray for me then, for my safe delivery and for a normal and healthy baby. Oh, the doctor still stick to her findings. The gender of the baby is a girl and that made my big girl, Chloe, to be very happy...
Few More Days To Go...
I have few more days left before I am sked for C/S. Currently, I've experienced Braxton Hicks contraction, a mild cramping. It's actually a false labor but quite a discomfort. My husband, who was away for more than 3 weeks now for his training in Manila, will arrive on July 10 and I will be admitted to the hospital on Monday, July 12. I have also prepared things that I needed to bring at the hospital and I hope everything is in place now... I'm on the nesting stage, too. I love to sleep anytime of the day... except during hot, humid afternoon! But other than that, I love sleeping :) I guess it's just a natural phase for any pregnant women to experience this especially on the last trimester. I guess this is it for now. I hope to post pictures of the baby in here after I give birth.
Just a favor: please include me and the baby in your prayers, will yah? Thanks a million for that ;-)
Looking Forward
I had a hard time sleeping at night because of my bulging tummy. It's hard for me to turn side to side and it really took me a lot of effort to do it. Sometimes, I ask Chloe to push or help me to turn over. She's also the one helping me to get up when I she saw me struggling. Since my husband's not yet around, that's what usually happen to us here. At night, I made sure to put a chair at my bedside to help me stand up at dawn whenever I need to pee... One more week at this will be over...
My Last Prenatal Checkup
Re-post from my other blog
Since I was not able to see my OB-Gyne last week, I had my prenatal checkup today. My father-in-law drove me to the hospital and as usual, my daughter Chloe tagged along with me. My daughter was always present in my entire checkup and I'm also happy that my doctor tried her best to answer my daughter's questions. It seemed that today is my last prenatal checkup with her and we will see each other on July 12, my schedule for CS. I'm glad that my cough and cold subsided but I was warned still not to drink anything cold (darn! - can't take that) so that I won't be coughing or get sick during my operation. The baby's heartbeat was good and the gender of the baby was still the same - a girl :D. The baby's position was cephalic but lies oblique that's why I find the baby heavier on my left side than on my right.
I was already given an order or admission slip, and I was asked thoroughly this time about my previous experience with CS. They will be the one to notify my pediatrician, too, so I think all is set now. I'll just wait for another week and I'll finally get to see our new addition to our family. Chloe is very excited to see her baby sibling, too. She's been choosing names for her sister and we highly considered it. My husband and I both knew that we should give attention to our eldest daughter considering that she's been an only child for almost 7 years! We expected that she will somehow regress when she sees her baby sibling but we want her to feel that she is still loved and cared by us even when the baby comes out. I know this is quite a big challenge on my part, to be able to provide equal attention to both my kids. But as long as I'll show them how much they mean to me and how important they are, I guess everything will be alright.
Chloe will turn 7 comes July 18 and I was asked if I want the baby to be born on that day but I declined. I thought about their feelings in the future. I want them to enjoy their own day and to celebrate it in a special way. Some may say it's costly in celebrating 2 birthdays in a week but who said I will celebrate it that way? I can still have a joint celebration for them (if I'm saving :D) but what is important is that I have their birth dates separated. As I've said, I want them to enjoy their day :D
June Preparation
It's already June and I'm now checking the things Chloe needs for her school. I'm also preparing things that I need for my hospitalization because I'll be on my 8th month this month and we don't know what will happen. We already bought some necessary things for the baby. I'll be seeing my doctor every two weeks, too. So far, the baby is good and my condition gets better. I pray that everything will run smoothly until my scheduled delivery. Wish me luck!
Tummy Talk
Hello Again! I tried to update my blog but I get sleepy every time I do it. As I've mentioned in my previous post, I'm on my 7th month already. Take a look at the pics below, that was taken last mother's day and you can see my bump. My brother & I, toghether with our families went to Pryce Plaza hotel and spent the afternoon there. I would love to swim with them at the pool because it was very hot but that would be very funny :D All I did was watch them and our things and took pictures of them. Of course, my tummy's big and it's getting even heavier everyday, so I might drown if I swim, hehe. My laptop just kept me company. Anyway, what was important was all of us had fun that day and everybody was full.
L: My sweet Chloe R: about to go home..noticed my bump?
In less than 2 months, I'll be giving birth already. Everybody's excited especially my daughter Chloe and I'm very happy for that. In fact, I kept her involve in my pregnancy. Now, she's busy finding names for her baby sibling and got so engrossed about the baby's development when reading it at her encyclopedia book or at the net. And she's a big help actually especially during the time when I was put on a bed rest. Glad I can move around now but I can't escape back pains so, at times, my husband helped me get up on the bed whenever I want to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night or sometimes, Chloe tried her best to help me to get up, too, after I took a nap in the afternoon. I'm glad I have these people around who I love and loves me in return. Thank you, Lord for my family, I couldn't asked for more!
What's Up?
Sorry, I've been lazy blogging lately. Sometimes, my mind was kinda just blank to think I have plenty to talk about. Problem is, when I'm on my site already, words just vanished from my mind...
To update you with my current pregnancy, I'm on my 7th month and I'm happy to say that my placenta is on its right position already. At least I'm not on strict bed rest now and I'm allowed to go malling (yey!) but of course I will not take risks. I'll just take it slowly.
Well, darn, I've thought about of so many things to say here awhile ago but now, suddenly I feel so sleepy... I'll just come back later and we'll see... I'll just take a nap, sigh...
Bed Rest...
I am currently on a bed rest. I experienced mild spotting a few days ago and I went to the hospital right away to have the placement of my placenta checked. The impression of my ultrasound was Placenta Previa Marginalis but glad that the baby's safe. I'm on my 5th month of pregnancy already but due to my delicate condition, I need to rest plenty. Now, I stopped driving our car, minimized going up and down our stairs, refrain from going to the mall :-( and I've declined several family invitations, too. I know they understand my condition and I've to do this to keep me and (most especially) the baby safe.
I'll be blogging here from time to time to keep you posted. And thanks for dropping by and for your comments. God bless you all!
My Current Status :-)
The reason why I am a bit lazy in blogging and bloghopping these days is this:
This is my current status right now and I'm on my 4th month already ;) Hope you'll bear with me because I prefer sleeping and reading, hehehe.
